These four splendid anthems were composed for the coronation of
George II in October 1727 and have since retained a position at the
heart of the English choral tradition. The popular anthem Zadok the
priest has been performed at all subsequent coronations, and
Handel's other contributions to the royal occasion - Let thy hand
be strengthened, The King shall rejoice, and My heart is inditing -
have the same majestic grandeur, with affecting contrasts between
different sections of the sacred texts. The editor, Clifford
Bartlett, has corrected various inconsistencies in Handel's score,
and complete details of sources and editorial method, additional
performance notes, and a critical commentary can be viewed in the
companion full score available on hire.
This collection presents 35 of Handel's finest keyboard works for
solo instruments, reproduced from the monumental Deutsche
Handelgesellschaft edition. Popular, accessible selections include
the celebrated Eight Great Suites, including the Harmonious
Blacksmith Air and the Passacaille in G Minor as well as sonatas,
partitas, and other works.
Originally published in 1925, the text for this edition of Semele
was compiled from the 1710 edition of Congreve's works and the
altered version adopted by Handel and published in 1762. The work
was performed in this form at the New Theatre, Cambridge in
February 1925. Lines omitted by the composer are printed in smaller
type, and his interpolations are set within square brackets. This
book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the works of
Congreve and Handel.
Jean-Christophe Spinosi leads the Ensemble Matheus in this
production of Handel's Messiah recorded live at the Theater an der
Wien, Vienna in 2009.
